The year was 2020. The government was banning books and shutting down arts programs. In response, a collective of young women instituted the Read All Over Theatre Company, an underground space for freedom of artistic and literary expression.
Scattered about the Mainstage, the collection of stretching actors looks out of place amongst the towering, violently metal pieces of scaffolding. Releasing the tension in their bodies through a primal yell, the cast gets ready for one of their final rehearsals before they head into tech week.
"I can't be friends with you, just so you know," the ageless and peerless unwashed girl atop a rusting jungle-gym warns young Oskar (Caoilin O'Conner '20). These ten words, defying their wary and lonely intentionality, are what spark the budding romance between the adolescent Oskar and the mysterious Eli (Samantha Fleishman '20).
